Sustainability at Emch+Berger
Our responsibility
We combine engineering expertise with innovative capacity and assume responsibility for the entire life cycle of buildings, from conception to operation. Through our corporate philosophy and our project achievements, we contribute to ensuring that present and future generations benefit from buildings that are ecologically, economically (see also construction economics), and socially sound.
Our goal is to minimise consumption of energy and resources, reduce land use, and simultaneously promote biodiversity through forward-looking solutions. In addition to ecological aspects, we always incorporate the economic and social dimensions into our work. Only when all three dimensions are in balance can solutions be developed that are sustainable over the long term.
Sustainability in the company
We achieve the greatest impact through our projects. However, we also consistently use every opportunity within our own company to operate more sustainably.
- We encourage the use of public transport for commuting and business trips.
- We are reducing energy consumption in our offices and our IT infrastructure.
- We support young workers through targeted training programmes and further education opportunities.
- We enable flexible working models such as part-time work and working from home, and support our employees in balancing their work and family life.
- We actively involve our employees – for example, through the staff committee and regular employee surveys.
- We actively promote the health and well-being of our employees – for example through sports programmes, relaxation zones in the offices and occupational health and safety training.
Our commitment to corporate social responsibility is evident in all areas of the company: from social sustainability through fair working conditions, environmental sustainability through resource conservation, and economic sustainability through long-term business management.
For larger companies within the Emch+Berger Group, we have our efforts regularly reviewed externally. For example, we participate in the CSR audits conducted by EcoVadis and Ecoentreprise – an internationally recognised platform for assessing sustainability and sustainable procurement.
Sustainability in projects and mandates
Our impact is even greater through our work on projects for our clients. With interdisciplinary teams of experts, we support building owners, investors and public clients in the sustainable planning, implementation and management of buildings, sites and infrastructure.
For us, sustainable development means developing high quality, practical, and long-term solutions that balance ecological, economic and social requirements in equal measure. We demonstrate how consumption of energy and resources can be minimised, how recyclable materials can be used, and how biodiversity and climate adaptation can be promoted at the same time. In doing so, we focus on renewable energies, energy-efficient building renovation, and innovative approaches to making projects future-proof.
Examples of our services:
- With our sustainability consultancy services for building construction and civil engineering projects, we create a sound basis for decision-making, from sustainability assessments to support for certifications.
- Through consulting and planning for circular construction, we develop concepts for circular materials and flexible building structures that will also meet future requirements.
- Future-oriented planning of building uses: multiple uses, extended lifespan, resource conservation
- Interdisciplinary optimisation of projects in all phases (development, planning, implementation, operation) with regard to their sustainability
- Consultancy and provision of expertise in relation to sustainable solutions in the construction industry
- Sustainable protection of people and buildings from natural hazards
- Ecological optimisation of construction projects and development of measures to promote biodiversity, enhance urban ecological quality as well as environmental impact assessment
- Engineering ecology: Ecosystem-based solutions for climate adaptation, water resource management and biodiversity, planning and implementation of sponge city/spongeland strategies, promotion of ecological infrastructure, upgrading of existing infrastructure buildings
- With digital construction and BIM, we make sustainable construction measurable and secure building data throughout the entire life cycle.
